Insights in Pirkei Avot: Honor and Anger

By Rabbi Yitzchak Blau, WebYeshiva

They would each say three things. Rabbi Eliezer would say: The honor of your fellow should be as precious to you as your own, and do not be quick to anger. Repent one day before your death. Warm yourself by the fire of the sages, but be cautious not to be burned by their coals; for their bite is the bite of a fox, their sting is the sting of a scorpion, their hiss is the hiss a serpent, and all their words are like fiery coals. (Avot… Continue

Parshat Bamidbar

By Rabbi Chaim Brovender, WebYeshiva

This week we begin the fourth of the five books of the Torah – Bamidbar, called Numbers in English. Bamidbar means “in the desert”, which is where the entire book takes place. The name Numbers comes from the fact that the book begins with, and again later on contains, a lot of counting of the Jewish people. In Bamidbar, the Nation of Israel readies itself to enter the Land of Israel. Just before actually doing so, in the portion of Shlach, which… Continue

Ramban on the Torah: Chronology of Narration & Literary Technique

By Rabbi Yitzchak Blau, WebYeshiva

Why does the Torah sometimes conjugate verbs in future tense when referring to an event that already happened or is currently happening? “Az yashir Moshe” (Shemot 15:1) seems to indicate that he will sing in the future; an inaccurate connotation. Chazal contend that this verse establishes the doctrine of resurrection since it implies Moshe and the Jewish people will sing in the future (Sanhedrin 91b). However, this approach reflects homiletical… Continue

Israel after Constatine

Now that I'm safely back from my last book tour promoting BOOK III - RACHEL [speaking at 100 events between September 2009 and May 2010], I finally have a nice long stretch of uninterrupted time to get cracking on RAV HISDA'S DAUGHTER in a more organized fashion. But first I want to finish reading all the material I photocopied at the HUC and JTS libraries , after which I'll determine what information I'm… Continue

Insights in Pirkei Avot: Foresight and Religious Excellence

By Rabbi Yitzchak Blau, WebYeshiva

He [R. Yohanan] said to them: Go and see which is the best trait for a person to acquire. R. Eliezer said: A good eye. R. Yehoshua said: A good friend. R. Yossi said: A good neighbor. R. Shimon said: One who has foresight. R. Elazar said: A good heart. He said to them: I prefer the words of Elazar ben Arach to yours, for his words include all of yours.

He said to them: Go and see the worst trait, which a person should distance himself from. R.… Continue

The truth is out there

The truth is out there. This is a tag line from famous X-Files. There are a lot of people who are certain that are no other kinds of life in the world, though there are the people who keep an open mind. I cannot say what point of view is more preferable for me. It seems to me that we are the only living things in the world but all those theories concerning extraterrestrial civilizations are so alluring. Once using a custom writing… Continue

By Rabbi Yitzchak Blau, WebYeshiva

1: And Hashem said to Moshe: Speak to the priests the sons of Aaron, and say to them: He shall not defile himself for the dead among his people; 2: except for his kin, those near to him, for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother; 3: and for his sister a virgin, that is near unto him, that has had no husband, for her may he defile himself. 4: He shall not defile himself, being a chief man among his… Continue
